Land Law held its autumn training seminar for fee earners and a few in-house lawyer friends on the morning of Friday 13th October at Altrincham Town Hall. Using the fictional site of ‘Land Law Ville’ as a worked example (artwork and people inspired place names courtesy of trainee solicitor Jennie Hartley) Property expert Alan Riley considered legal issues arising on shared estates that we all need to watch out for.

Topics included use and enforcement of restrictive covenants, easements for shared facilities, service charge obligations, the use of long leases in residential developments and the problems that can arise (particularly in light of the Government consultation on the issue), and some potential alternatives to leasehold structures. The course also provided an update on the new Electronic Communications Code and considered legal issues arising from having telecommunications masts within property developments. The training session was followed by an informal buffet lunch.
